Violet

The first thing I notice about Sierran is the humidity.

He wasn’t kidding when he said that it was a small coastal country. I can literally taste the salt in the ocean breeze.

The people are friendly and warm, but I was expecting that. Brody is the Crown Prince after all. Of course he would be treated with nothing but adoration.

A black limo appears, and the chauffeur gets out. He opens the door for us.

“Thanks Geronimo,” says Brody.

“I trust that your trip was comfortable?” asks the driver. His smile is hidden underneath an enormous walrus mustache.

Brody nods. “It went well. Oh, and this is Violet.”

“Miss Vera,” he greets me, smiling wider. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

“You...know about me?” I ask.

“You have our prince captivated. And now I see why,” he says good-naturedly.

I duck under the roof of the car, and slide inside. The seats are plush and the air conditioning is almost chilly. My nipples perk up under the blue blouse I’m wearing.

“Geronimo has been around since I was in diapers,” explains Brody, taking a seat beside me.

Victoria sits in front of us. She seems very introspective today, lost in her own thoughts.

The limousine zips through tree-lined streets. I keep the window open a crack to let some fresh air in, and to keep my car nausea at bay.

There’s a lot of foliage here, way more than I’m used to in the city. Everything is a vibrant shade of green.

As we inch closer to our final destination, uncertainty kicks in.

I am so unprepared.

I have no clue what to do next. What are the customs? Is there an etiquette I should know about? Am I wearing the right clothes?

All of my thoughts freeze when I see the palace for the first time. And then they come flooding back, stronger and fiercer than before.

In the middle of what looks like more than ten acres of land, stands a magnificent building.

“It’s got an underground dungeon,” whispers Brody, leaning into me.

When I look at him with wide eyes, he chuckles. I slap his arm. “You’re not helping,” I say, and go back to gawking at the building.

“It felt like a prison to us when we were growing up,” says Violet, speaking up for the first time. “We were rarely allowed to go outside. Our parents used to be very controlling.”

When she catches the alarmed look on my face, she clears her throat. “I mean, they’re pretty open minded now, I guess. But it honestly doesn’t matter what they think, because Brody is going to stick by you no matter what.”

I look at him. He blinks as if to say that his sister’s right.

I swallow, and look back at the approaching palace.

The garden around it is beautifully landscaped. I spy some fruit trees in the distance, their branches hanging low with unplucked fruit.

There’s life here. Birds, bees, insects, and thriving plants.

As for the building itself, it’s surprisingly modern. It has a white and gray exterior, and looks like it houses a couple hundred rooms inside.

“This wasn’t what I was expecting,” I say.
